Day of the Dead Inside the Gate: Quivira's Calendar From the Sailboat Ofrendas to "This Is Michael"

Where does a Quivira owner spend the night of November 2? Most coverage of Day of the Dead in Cabo San Lucas points to downtown and the marina. On the Pacific side, the night has its own schedule. A free hour of ofrendas and Catrinas at the Beach Club ends at 6:00 p.m., and at 6:00 p.m. a beach party opens a short walk down the coast at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica. Two more dinners are already underway at Sunset Beach and Montecristo Estates.

The same pattern holds for the next six weeks. Every date on Quivira's calendar between now and mid-December is held on the community's own grounds: the Beach Club, the Pacifica courts and the Quivira Golf Club. Anyone who lives here can reach every event on this page without leaving the gate.

Sunday, November 1: LaFrida Opens the Weekend

The first evening belongs to LaFrida, the restaurant at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach. For Day of the Dead it is building an ofrenda dedicated to Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and on November 1 it will serve a special tasting menu with live music from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.

The regular price is $145 USD, and the all-inclusive plan rate is $85 USD. Reservations are required, through extensions 8180 to 8190 according to Pueblo Bonito's Day of the Dead announcement, which the resort group published on October 16.

Of all the events this weekend, this is the most intimate and the most expensive per person. It also gives anyone planning to enter the Catrina contest the next day an evening to look at an ofrenda built by professionals.

Monday, November 2, 5:00 p.m.: The Sailboat at the Beach Club

The community's own Day of the Dead runs through Q Life, Quivira's resident programming, and it is free. It takes place at the Sailboat at the Beach Club, listed at Predio Paraíso Escondido, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. on November 2.

Q Life's event page lists two contests, one for ofrenda altars and one for Catrín and Catrina costumes. Each awards prizes for first, second and third place. Tacos will be sold on site. Registration closes at 6:00 p.m. on November 2, the same minute the event ends.

This is the one free hour in Quivira's Day of the Dead, and it's when neighbors see each other's altars. It is also short. The event lasts an hour, so it fits in before a longer evening somewhere else. That works because the paid events on the same grounds are timed to begin around when it ends.

Monday, November 2, After 6:00 p.m.: Three Evenings Within Reach

Pueblo Bonito's announcement lists three November 2 events on Quivira's coastline. Each starts within an hour of the Sailboat hour, and they offer three very different nights.

Venue Hours on Nov. 2 What's planned Regular price Reservations
Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, on the beach 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Action stations, Mexican buffet, alebrije parade, artisan market, pre-Hispanic shaman ceremony, traditional ofrenda $1,800 MXN Ext. 645
Aqua 17, Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. Mexican flavors festival, live mariachi, fireworks, traditional dance show Adults $98 USD plus 15% service, open national bar included; children and teens $29 USD plus 15% Main Lobby, Ext. 8140, from Oct. 26
Cibola, Montecristo Estates 5:30 to 10:00 p.m. Mexican action stations and buffet $60 USD Ext. 3568

Pacifica's event starts at 6:00 p.m., exactly when the Sailboat contest ends, so it is the natural next stop for anyone who wants the evening to keep the same mood. The alebrijes are the brightly painted figures that look like mythical creatures, and with them, the artisan market and a traditional ofrenda, Pacifica is the closest of the three to a full festival.

Aqua 17 is the event with fireworks, and it is the only one of the three that lists a separate price for children and teens. That makes it the clearest option for a family group. Its doors open at 5:00 p.m., the same time the Sailboat hour starts, so families who want both will either arrive at Aqua 17 late or leave the Beach Club early. Reservations opened in the Main Lobby on October 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Cibola is a restaurant on a seaside bluff inside Montecristo Estates, and its $60 USD regular price is the lowest of the three. It suits a quieter dinner after the contest, and its 5:30 p.m. start leaves room to arrive late.

A Quivira Day of the Dead can run from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. on November 2, with a free hour among neighbors followed by four hours at a venue minutes away. All of it happens inside the community.

Thursday and Friday, November 19 and 20: Pickleball at the Pacifica Courts

After Day of the Dead, the next date on the community calendar is a sporting one. The QLife Pickleball Tournament, now in its third edition, runs on the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Courts from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. on November 19 and again on November 20.

According to Q Life's tournament listing, the format is round robin, with categories for singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Players can enter more than one category, and all skill levels are welcome. Entry is open to Quivira and Tramonti homeowners, long-term renters, short-term renters and hotel guests. The listing also says spots are limited and adults only. Registration closes November 14 at 6:00 p.m.

Pacifica appears in this guide twice. Its beach hosts the November 2 party, and its courts host the tournament. Owners who walk to one already know the way to the other. The November 14 cutoff also comes nearly a week before play starts, so the deadline is the date to put on the calendar.

Friday, December 11: "This Is Michael" at Quivira Golf Club

Quivira Golf Club is best known for golf, but it has hosted concerts before, including Matute and Miguel Bosé, as well as editions of the Sabor a Cabo festival. The next show is on December 11. The Letty Coppel Foundation presents This Is Michael, a live Michael Jackson tribute led by Lenny Jay. Pueblo Bonito announced it on October 22.

Pueblo Bonito's announcement says the production has played in more than 15 countries and bills itself as the Michael Jackson show with the most tickets sold worldwide. The organizers also say its band includes original musicians who played with Michael Jackson.

Ticket tiers, all priced per person and before booking fees:

  • VIP Premium: $3,500 MXN, at tables for 10 that each include two bottles of liquor
  • VIP Preferred: $3,000 MXN, at tables for 10 that each include two bottles of liquor
  • Platinum: $1,500 MXN, individual seating
  • General admission: $1,000 MXN, standing

Tickets are sold through Kboletos. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the show starts at 8:00 p.m. Food and drinks will be sold on site, and parking is free. The evening is billed as family friendly, but everyone under 18 needs a full-price ticket, which matters when a household is pricing a table.

The evening also raises money for a local cause. Letty Coppel started the foundation in 2004, and it is funded by private donations for work in health, social care, education and local culture in Los Cabos and Mazatlán. Its Los Cabos Social Assistance Center opened in 2021, and the announcement describes its mobile medical units as the first of their kind in Baja California Sur.

Every Thursday Between the Big Dates: The Market by Amakiri

The big dates stand out on the calendar, and a weekly market fills the weeks between them. Quivira's own published schedule puts the Farmer's Market at Amakiri Botanical Garden on Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., October through August. Usually 25 to 40 exhibitors set up under white tents arranged in a U beside the garden of native and rare cacti.

The vendors the community names are as specific as the evening events. La Jarana makes sourdough rounds and chicken tamales in green sauce wrapped in banana leaves. Areca Bakery Lab, a San José bakery, brings its New York Cookies along with vegan, gluten-free cakes and pies such as a banana and pecan cake. Casa Portugal Mezcal makes an espadín mezcal aged in clay pots, and founder Diego Portugal told Quivira that all proceeds go to an animal shelter for stray dogs.

By that schedule, the market falls on November 19, the first morning of the pickleball tournament, and on Thursdays all through the weeks leading up to the golf club concert. A Catrina costume for the Sailboat contest, a tamale after an 8:00 a.m. pickleball match and a table on the golf club lawn on December 11 all take place inside the gate.
