Both of Baja California Sur's MICHELIN Green Stars Are in Ánimas Bajas, Near Querencia

Most of the Los Cabos MICHELIN story is told from resort lobbies: a starred tasting room at Grand Velas, a recommended kitchen at The Cape and another at Las Ventanas. The sustainability honors tell a different story. In the 2026 selection, Baja California Sur earned exactly two MICHELIN Green Stars. One went to Acre and the other to Flora's Field Kitchen. Both are farm restaurants in Ánimas Bajas, a short drive inland from San José del Cabo.

Neither one is new to the list. Both have held a Green Star since the guide first came to Mexico in 2024. As high season gets going this month, the two farms closest to Querencia have the steadiest record in the state's dining scene, and each runs on a weekly schedule worth learning before you show up.

The 2026 Announcement Was a Confirmation

MICHELIN revealed its 2026 Mexico selection on May 20, 2026. The local celebration came two months later. On July 30, Cabo News Today reported that plaques for all 22 Baja California Sur restaurants in the guide had been presented at Manta, inside The Cape, a Thompson Hotel.

According to that report, only one restaurant collected a plaque for the first time this year: NEMI in La Paz. Every other restaurant was keeping something it already had. Cocina de Autor kept its MICHELIN Star. Acre and Flora's Field Kitchen kept their Green Stars, and Flora's Field Kitchen also kept its Bib Gourmand. The star at Cocina de Autor in Grand Velas was first awarded in the 2024 edition, so it has now appeared in all three Mexico selections.

For the two farms, the full record looks like this:

Restaurant 2024 2025 2026
Flora's Field Kitchen, Ánimas Bajas Green Star, Bib Gourmand Green Star, Bib Gourmand Green Star, Bib Gourmand
Acre, Rincón de las Ánimas Green Star, Recommended Green Star Green Star, Recommended

Acre's own restaurant page shows its Green Star for each of the three years. MICHELIN lists Flora's Field Kitchen among the 2026 Bib Gourmands for Baja California Sur. Cocina de Campo by Agricole and Metate also kept their Bib Gourmands, but neither is in Ánimas Bajas. Flora's Field Kitchen is the only restaurant in the state that holds both a Green Star and a Bib Gourmand.

The Green Star rewards a restaurant's practices, not only its plates. Cabo News Today describes it as an award for responsible practices, resource conservation and collaboration with local producers. Because those practices are rooted in the farmland itself, holding the award three years in a row reflects the farms as much as the kitchens.

Flora Farms Runs on a Weekly Rhythm, and Monday Is the Quiet Day

Flora Farms is more than the Field Kitchen. The property also includes the Farm Bar and the Flora Farms Grocery, where produce from the farm is sold. Reservations for the Field Kitchen are made through the Flora Farms website.

Monday is the farm's quiet day. The farm's cooking classes page says the restaurant, bar, shops and grocery market are all closed during the daytime. Plan a Monday lunch there with out-of-town guests and you will find the gates quiet.

October also moves the classes to a new schedule. The farm splits its year into a High Season from October through April and a Summer Season from May through September. Classes run 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in High Season and 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in summer, so the fall start is an hour later than it was in September. The dish you cook depends on the day you book:

  • Monday and Wednesday, Seasonal Tamales: chicken tamales with hibiscus cream, served with guacamole, chile de árbol salsa and Caesar salad. Monday's class still runs, even though the rest of the farm is closed that day.
  • Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, The Tortilla Table: the class starts with nixtamal, the traditional corn process, then you grind, press and fill your own tortillas with homestyle Mexican dishes.
  • Friday and Saturday, Regional Salsas: Baja salsas served with Baja fish tacos, cilantro rice, black beans, seasonal salad, coleslaw and the farm's key lime pie.

Classes cost $2,775 MXN per person, tax included. Groups of six or more pay an added 18% service charge, children 11 and under pay half, and children under 5 are not allowed in public classes. A credit card holds your spot, but the charge doesn't go through until the class ends. A class is canceled if fewer than six guests sign up, and you are told 24 hours ahead and not charged. Each class includes a farm tour, a cocktail, a family-style lunch and a recipe booklet. The farm accepts bookings up to 90 days out and recommends booking ahead, though walk-ins can sometimes join if there is space.

That six-guest minimum is useful if you are hosting. A household with visitors can fill a Friday salsa class on its own and keep it from being canceled.

Acre Keeps a Different Clock

Acre is in Rincón de las Ánimas and is open at different hours than Flora's. Its restaurant page currently lists a menu labeled "Summer Season," with weekday service from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and weekend service starting at 4:30 p.m. and running to 10:00 p.m. Because the menu is seasonal and still carries the summer label in mid-October, check the page for current hours before you go.

Weekends start early with brunch. À la carte brunch runs Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and a brunch tasting menu runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Two weeknight specials are posted for 4:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.: Taco Tuesday and Ribs Night. Reservations are made online, and Acre has a 48-hour cancellation policy, which matters if your guests' plans tend to change.

Acre is a resort as well as a restaurant. Its cocktail bar and Colibrí Cantina are part of the property, and its rooms include treehouses.

Put the two schedules side by side and the area works across the whole week. Flora's is closed during the day on Mondays, while Acre's posted weekday hours begin at noon. On weekends, Acre's brunch is over by 2:00 p.m., about when a Flora Farms cooking class lets out.

The Rest of San José del Cabo's 2026 List Stays Close to Town

Beyond the two farms, the 2026 guide kept eight San José del Cabo restaurants as Recommended: Acre, Árbol at Las Ventanas Al Paraíso, CarbónCabrón, LÍMO Heritage Kitchen at Suelo Sur, Lumbre, Nao, Omakai and Ruba's Bakery. Several are in or near the historic center. Lumbre is at José María Morelos 162. MICHELIN lists LÍMO Heritage Kitchen in Centro. CarbónCabrón is at El Merkado, Transpeninsular Km 24.5. MICHELIN describes Ruba's Bakery, at Morelos 8, as an Arts District bistro.

The genuinely new names this fall are at the beach end of San José. The Cabo Magazine reported on September 19 that Viceroy Los Cabos is reopening in San José del Cabo after a resort-wide renovation, with two new concepts. Nodo is an Italian market, and Archaea is a hidden speakeasy. Neither has a MICHELIN rating yet, and the magazine notes that menus and hours at brand-new restaurants can change quickly.

Inspectors will judge these newcomers in future editions. For now, the San José area's two longest-held MICHELIN honors are still on the farm roads of Ánimas Bajas, where the Monday closure and the 10:30 a.m. class start are the details to plan around this season.

I grew up in Cabo, and Ánimas Bajas is one of the places I point people to when they want to know what everyday life near Querencia looks like.
